"Mate" is a wide-spread drink in the South Cone of South America. It is made of an infusion of herbs with water at a temperature close to boiling point (approximately 85°C). The herbs come from a plant that grows abundantely in South America, but nowhere else. The herbs are placed in a receptacle that seems, at first glance, to be made of wood, but which is in fact, made of a very hard, dried vegetable named in Spanish "calabaza", some sort of pumpkin. We drink mate through a "bombilla", a metal straw. Whenever the liquid is too hot, it burns the throat! However, when the temperature is perfect, the taste of the mate is exquisite. At the base of the bombilla, there is a filter that hinders the herbs going through. That way, only the infusion with high purity is drunk, without traces of herbs.
Le mate est bu principalement en Argentine, en Uruguay, au Brésil et au sud du Chili. Dans chaque pays, le mate est préparé différemment. Les Argentins boivent souvent le mate sucré, avec deux cuillères à thé de sucre avant chaque gorgée. Les Uruguayens boivent leur mate amer, sans aucune trace de sucre et se moquent des Argentins en disant qu’ils boivent du mate de fillette... Les Brésiliens boivent leur mate dans une calabaza très grande. Le résultat est très amer. Au sud du Chili, le mate est souvent préparé comme en Argentine. Dans la photo, un touriste brésilien achète une calabaza "typique" d’Argentine à Buenos Aires.
El mate es bebido principalmente en Argentina, en Uruguay, en Brasil y en el sur de Chile. En cada país, preparan el mate de manera diferente. Los argentinos beben a menudo mate dulce, con dos cucharritas de azúcar antes de echar mas agua. Los uruguayos beben mate amargo, sin nada de azúcar y se burlan de los argentinos diciendo que ellos toman "mate de maricón"... Los brasileiros toman mate en calabazas muy grandes. Eso da un mate muy amargo. En el sur de Chile, el mate parece mucho al mate argentino. En la foto, un turista brasileño está buscando una calabaza "típica" argentina, en Buenos Aires.
En Uruguay, tout le monde prend du mate, n’importe où! Partout dans la rue, on trouve des gens transportant leur bouteille Thermos, pleine d’eau chaude, avec leur calabaza, leur bombilla et leurs herbes. Ils la boivent assis dans un parc...
